Research: Obituary & Other Requests

This form is for obituary and birth announcement requests for out-of-town customers only. If you live in the Spokane area, you are expected to come in to do your research. Spokane Public Library has access to Spokane County newspapers only, so we cannot search for any announcements outside of this area. We will search for three announcements at a time and will search the newspaper for 5 days after an event date. You may interlibrary loan a microfilm copy of the newspaper from the State Library if you wish to continue the search yourself. Contact your local library for more information.

Please keep the following in mind for particular requests:

Obituaries - Most obituaries are classified ads; not everyone who dies has one. Death notices are more common and are sometimes submitted by funeral homes. Be sure to search our Obituary Search first to see if you can find exact information.
Birth Notices are submitted by hospitals, but only when the child is released; a newborn with health problems may not appear in the newspaper right away.

Results can be emailed or mailed. Emailed copies are free and delivered in .pdf format. Mailed copies cost 10 cents a page. For more information, the library's Genealogy Resources will get you started and help you find dates. The Washington State Digital Archives has some vital records available online, so be sure to check there first.
