Deborah Feldman’s memoir Unorthodox: the Scandalous Rejection of my Hasidic Rootstells her story of being raised in a strict Hasidic community where decisions most people take for granted were tightly controlled. At the age of seventeen she was married to a stranger and at nineteen she had a son. His birth prompted her to dramatically change her life. Unorthodox offers insight into the practices of Orthodox Jews, and takes readers through a journey of strength and growth.
