General Market Commentaries

Dow Theory Letters: Richard Russell’s Dow Theory Letter provides current US and foreign stock market commentary, as well as covering bonds, precious metals, commodities and economics.


InvesTech Market Analyst: The InvesTech Market Analyst and its companion publication the InvesTech Mutual Fund Advisor take a generally conservative approach to asset allocation and predicting market swings.


Standard and Poor's Outlook: Standard & Poor’s flagship investment advisory service offers institutional-quality research to professionals and individual investors alike. As the oldest continuously published investment newsletter in the country, The Outlook has been a source of objective investing ideas for over 75 years.

 

Investing in Stocks

Value Line Investment Survey: Gives a comparative analysis of about 1700 stocks. Value Line ranks each stock for timeliness and safety.  Its main section, "Ratings and Reports",provides a full-page report for each stock, including the company's past performance, current status, and outlook. 


Value Line - Small and Mid Cap Survey: The Expanded Edition covers approximately 1,800 additional stocks not included in the Value Line Investment Survey, mostly small-capitalization stocks.

 

On the Web:

ValueLine Dow Thirty: Free reports for the Dow 30, the 30 largest Dow Industrial Average companies, are offered free on the Value Line site.


Yahoo! Finance's Stock Screener: Choose an industry, input share data, performance data, etc, and see what stocks meet your criteria.  Yahoo Finance Center has recently merged with Quicken's stock information website.


Bigcharts: Enter a symbol or company name at the top to get a quick chart, articles,market advice, or choose a full profile, annual reports, SEC filings, etc.  Search for historical stock quotes.

 

In-depth Company Research

Business and Company Resource Center: This database is a subscription service the library has purchased. Only Spokane Public Library card holders, or people who visit a Spokane Public Library branch can access it.  You can view company profiles, read news articles, and read investment reports from brokerage firms such as Merrill Lynch and Thomson Financial.


SEC Filings (EDGAR): These are the reports publicly traded companies must file with the Securities and Exchanges Commission.

 

Penny, Small Cap and OTC Stocks

Mergent's Handbook of Common Stocks: Formerly Moody's. An indispensable resource covering performance data, trends and profiles of New York Stock Exchange companies.


Mergent's Handbook of Nasdaq Stocks: Does the same thing as the Handbook of Common Stocks but for the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Morningstar Mutual Funds Survey: Ranks and rates mutual funds for performance, style and risk. Full-page reports on over 1700 mutual funds.

 

On the Web:

Yahoo! Finance's Fund Screener: Choose a type of fund, fund family, rank in category, ratings and returns, and see which mutual funds meet your criteria.


Morningstar.com: The site contains fund rating reports and stock quotes, some free and some not. Fund and stock reports can be retrieved by name, ticker symbol, rating, or performance criteria.

Mergent Bond Record: Formerly Moody’s Bond Record, this comprehensive review of over 68,000 bond issues provides complete and accurate coverage of the entire market, including issuer name, description, rating action, maturity date, redemption information and new issues.  Compiled annually in Mergent Annual Bond Record.


Standard and Poor’s Bond Guide.

 

On the Web:

InvestinginBonds.com: Municipal bond investors can turn to this site supported by the Bond Market Association. Trading reports and prices are posted, and the bonds are listed with credit ratings and yields.


SavingsBonds.gov: From the federal government's Bureau of Public Debt, this site contains a wealth of information on EE-, HH-, and I-series savings bonds, treasury bills and notes, state and local government securities, and current figures on the national debt. You may also be interested in the Savings Bond Value Calculator.


Yahoo! Finance's Bond Screener: Select a bond type, the amount you want to invest, the maturity date range and your safety level, and see what bonds meet your criteria.

Mergent’s Dividend Achievers: Profiles U.S. public companies that have increased their cash dividends annually for the past ten consecutive years.
