Search Engines

Search Engines

  • Google rapidly searches billions of web pages.
  • Bing is Microsoft's newest search engine service
  • Ask.com is another useful search engine.
  • CompletePlanet locates databases on the internet whose contents are not searched by other search engines.
  • WolframAlpha is a computational search engine, which means you can type in a calculation or a formula and get an answer.

Filtered Search Engines

Most search engines will allow you to restrict the results to sites that are "family friendly".  Look for the Preferences or Options section on the main search page.

  • Google SafeSearch allows setting preferences to block web pages containing explicit sexual content from appearing in search results.
  • Yahoo lets you set your filters and lock them so no one else can change them.

Subject Guides

  • About.com is a commercial subject guide that features editors for a wide variety of topics.
  • Internet Public Library's purpose is to provide an online library experience for its users, with dozens of high-quality websites carefully selected, described, and organized by a team of librarians

Multiple Search Engines

  • DogPile searches several major search engines at once
