DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION (DEI)

DEI ADVISORY COUNCIL

In the summer of 2020, the Library formed the DEI Advisory Council, a staff led working group that supports Spokane Public Library employees with learning opportunities and tools to actively promote an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace and community.

Spokane Public Library is committed to integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into all internal and external operations. The Library also employs a DEI consultant to guide all DEI work and provide leadership training.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

Spokane Public Library has long embraced a commitment toward inclusivity, diversity, and equity. Here are some examples of our work.

  • Providing free period products in all restrooms
  • Regular all staff trainings on DEI topics such as Understanding Microaggressions, Understanding Implicit Bias, Working with LGBTQ+ Populations, Disability Awareness
  • Recognizing cultural heritage months and highlighting diverse and inclusive content and materials year-round
  • Hosting two festive Drag Queen Story Hours in 2018, with the goal of teaching children to embrace diversity and an Understanding Drag Panel to address questions about the program
  • Creating a monthly DEI staff newsletter to support a DEI continuous learning curriculum
  • Partnering with organizations in our community who serve diverse populations, including providing space for Community Court
