DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION (DEI)

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Spokane Public Library has long embraced a commitment toward inclusivity, diversity, and equity. According the American Library Association, “equity, diversity, and inclusion are central to the promotion and practice of intellectual freedom. Libraries are essential to democracy and self-government, to personal development and social progress, and to every individual’s inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To that end, libraries and library workers should embrace equity, diversity, and inclusion in everything that they do.”

Here are some examples of what this looks like at Spokane Public Library:

  • We support the American Library Association’s Freedom to Read and Freedom to View.
  • We observe Banned Books Week every year, celebrating the freedom to access information.
  • We recognize cultural heritage months and highlight diverse and inclusive content and materials year-round.
  • We provide free period products in all restrooms.
  • We partner with organizations in our community who serve diverse populations, including providing space for Community Court.
