Earth Day Events & Resources in Spokane

Join us in celebrating the world’s largest environmental movement – Earth Day! This year, we rally behind the theme “Invest In Our Planet”, which highlights the importance of dedicating time, resources, and energy to solving climate change and other environmental issues.

Spokane City Parks & Recreation, Spokane Public Library, and Spokane Public Works have come together to provide a comprehensive list of citywide events and resources that celebrate Earth Day!

Gardening with Pat Munts: Building Soil for Your Garden
April 15 at 1pm | Shadle Park Library
Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned gardener, soil is the very first step to the success of a garden. Pat Munts guides you through the elements that make great soil.

Magic Beans: Grow Your Own Legume (for Kids Ages 6-12)
April 19 at 4pm | South Hill Library
Learn about the magical power of beans and their value in our ecosystem. Featuring a fun presentation on diversity and seed saving from local bean curator Sarah Dohle of the USDA.

Installing a Drip Irrigation System
April 19 at 6:30pm | Shadle Park Library
Want to have a lush garden while saving money and the environment? Learn how to install a drip irrigation system! It is easy, inexpensive, and efficient.

Hope for Creation Conference
April 22 from 8:30am-4:30pm | St. John’s Cathedral
It’s a gathering focused on environmental care with a focused reflection on Spokane’s Expo ’74 – the first world’s fair dedicated to the environment. At the conference, a representative from Expo’s 50th celebration committee will speak to the plans for the commemorative event in 2024. 

Doris Morrison Learning Center (DMLC) Grand Opening
April 22 from 10am-2pm

Spokane County is opening the Doris Morrison Learning Center at Saltese Flats on Earth Day! The grand opening will be between 10am and 2pm – feel free to come all day or stop by for a quick visit. The event will include live raptor shows, guided bird walks, scavenger hunts, activity booths from community partners, and much more!

Nature Walk with Jack Nisbet
April 22 at 11am | Liberty Park Library
Take a stroll along the Ben Burr Trail with award-winning naturalist/author Jack Nisbet while he talks about the natural wonders in our own backyard.

Earth Day/Arbor Day Tree Symposium and Tree Seedling Giveaway with Urban Forestry
April 22 from 9am-12pm | On-Track Academy
Students will display their tree projects and many fun activities are planned including art and crafts and a tree planting demonstration. On-Track Academy will be celebrating their prestigious Tree Campus USA accreditation through the National Arbor Day Foundation. This event is free for everyone to attend and there will be many species of seedlings available.

Compost in a Box: Build Your Own Worm Farm (for Kids Ages 8-14)
April 26 at 4pm | Liberty Park Library
Make your own home compost kit with red wriggler worms. Register online to attend this free event. Space and materials are limited.

SpokaneScape: A City Water Rebate Program
April 26 at 6:30pm | Shadle Park Library
If you live in the City of Spokane, you may qualify for a city water rebate by converting to a water-wise yard! Learn more about how to add beauty to your home and save money at the same time.

Created too many tomato indoor seed starts and not enough basil? Come swap out your extra garden stash at our Spring Garden Plant Swap! This event is a joint effort with Growing Neighbors and generously supported by the Vets on the Farm. 

Spring Compost Fair & Arbor Day Celebration
April 29 from 11am-2pm | John A. Finch Arboretum
Rain or shine, Spokane Parks & Recreation will host family activities, tree care and environmental education. Co-hosts Spokane County Master Composters will share all there is to know about bringing life to your soil.

  • SpokaneScape Turf Replacement Program
    Removing turf grass is one of the most water-conscious adjustments a homeowner can make to reduce their water usage and associated costs. A well-designed SpokaneScape will beautify your property, protect our natural resources and the environment; and will inevitably reduce yard maintenance. City of Spokane Water customers can earn up to a $500 credit towards their utility bill after removing lawn and replacing it with water wise plants and mulch.
  • Reporting Illicit Discharges in Storm Drains
    Everyone can play a role in managing stormwater and improving the health of the Spokane River. We ask citizens to report spills and discharges of pollutants into storm drains. Please call our hotline at 509.625.7999 to make a report. An illicit discharge is any flow or dumping to a municipal separate storm sewer of any substance that is not composed entirely of stormwater. There are only a few exceptions to this rule, including discharges from emergency firefighting operations.
