Libraries have long been the cornerstone of a democratic society, providing equitable access to information and a sanctuary for lifelong learning. In Spokane, our award-winning libraries have evolved far beyond their original roles. They are now dynamic centers for economic development, technological innovation, and cultural enrichment. They are also the envy of the country.
On April 1st, the Spokane Public Library Foundation invites you to participate in Library Giving Day. This national day of advocacy and giving is a vital opportunity for our community to invest in the margin of excellence … the programs and services that transform a standard library into a world-class community resource.
The Role of the Spokane Public Library Foundation
While public funding secures the essential operations of our library branches, the Spokane Public Library Foundation (SPLF) serves as the bridge between basic service and community transformation. Through the generosity of private donors, the Foundation funds the innovative extras that public budgets often cannot cover.
As a 501(c)3 run by entirely volunteer directors, our priority is making sure every donor dollar goes back into library services. You can trust that your contributions to the Foundation are direct investments in the social and intellectual capital of our city and our people.
Quantifiable Impact: Where Your Investment Goes
Donations to the SPLF don’t just sit on a shelf; they are put to work immediately across our city. Recent initiatives fueled by private support include all of the following:
- Workforce and Small Business Development in Business Resources: Providing entrepreneurs with the high-tech workspaces and research tools necessary to launch and scale local businesses.
- Culture Pass Experiences: Democratizing access to the arts by providing library patrons with free admission to the Spokane Symphony, Mobius Discovery Center, and the Spokane Civic Theatre.
- Early Childhood Literacy: Funding STEM kits and Summer Reading initiatives, critical programs that keep Spokane’s youth reading, learning and engaged all year long.
- Community Sustainability: Supporting unique localized projects, such as the community garden at the Indian Trail Library.
A Catalyst for a Thriving Spokane
A library is one of the few remaining third places, a space outside of home and work where every citizen is welcome regardless of their socioeconomic status. By supporting the SPLF, you are ensuring Spokane remains a city where curiosity is encouraged and the tools for self-improvement are available to all. After all, Spokane is special. We’re not like those other places, and neither are libraries.
In an increasingly digital and divided world, our libraries remain a neutral ground for connection and a primary engine for social mobility.
