Leave of Absence

Adopted by Spokane Public Library Board of Trustees on April 21, 2009.

1. GENERAL

While it is expected that leave accrued under the library’s vacation, sick leave, and floating holiday policies will be adequate to meet employees’ needs, there may be rare occasions when an employee is faced with an emergency or special circumstance requiring an unpaid personal leave of absence.  The following outlines the Library’s general policy in regard to leaves of absence.  For specific information regarding military leave, family and medical leave, and leave for jury duty please refer to the policies addressing those topics.

2. STATEMENT OF POLICY

A leave of absence is defined as an unpaid approved absence from work for a specified period of time for medical, parental, military or personal reasons.  It is the policy of the Spokane Public Library that a leave of absence may be granted in order to maintain continuity of service when unusual or unavoidable circumstances require an employee’s absence and paid leave accruals are not available.  Each request will be evaluated on an individual basis.

3. ADMINISTRATION

The Board grants full authority to Library Administration to develop and administer rules, processes and procedures in regard to unpaid leaves of absence for personal reasons for periods of 365 consecutive calendar days or less.  Medical, parental and military leave are addressed in separate policies and procedures.
