Join us for Space Science for Kids via Zoom on December 7, 2021, at 4pm. Registration is required – sign up HERE! Please note that there is a take-home kit that goes with this program. Supplies are limited and registration does not reserve you a kit – so plan to pick them up at the Library! (Photo from NASA/Chris Gunn)
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) launches on December 18, 2021 and we’ll be hearing a lot about it. In our December Space Science for Kids event, we’ll learn about this amazing new telescope – the largest to ever be sent to space – and what it will show us about our solar system, galaxy, and universe!
Among other things, the JWST will study the life cycles of the largest stars in our universe. During our event, we’ll create a bookmark that includes using colored pony beads to represent the stages of these stars’ development. These stars end their lives in a dramatic supernova explosion, and they seed the universe with elements necessary for planets, life and civilization.
Take-home kits will be available at all open Spokane Public Library locations starting Monday, November 29, 2021. Supplies are limited, so if you aren’t able to pick up a kit, here’s what you’ll need:
- A printout of the bookmark, available HERE (if you can, print on cardstock.)
- 6-8 inches of yarn
- 8 pony beads in these colors: green, blue, white, yellow, orange, red, black, green
- Tools you’ll need include a hole punch, scissors, and scotch tape.
