All around our city, workers are using trucks and tools to get the job done. Some have many uses, such as a utility truck carrying parts for people working on our water infrastructure. Others, like the ice scraper at the Numerica Skate Ribbon, have a specific use, like shaving ice and re-applying water to make the skating surface smooth again.
This spring I got to visit some of the important vehicles and their handlers at work around the city. At Fire Station 4, I learned about the difference between a fire engine and a ladder truck from the helpful firefighters working to keep our community safe. At the arboretum, a park worker demonstrated how the Rake-o-Vac® removes leaves from the lawn in a fraction of the time it would take to rake them by hand—keeping our parks beautiful for summer recreation. A garbage truck operator showed me how sensors and a can-grabbing hand help him pick up and haul recyclables all around town. Each of these skilled individuals has found a way to use tools and equipment to get difficult jobs done.
If you want to get a closer look at vehicles with important jobs, join us for Touch-a-Truck on Friday, June 27th at the Hillyard Library from 9:30-11:30. We’ll have a garbage truck, water vac truck, ambulance, and more!
