What is Compost? Let’s Explore Spokane

Waste is a big part of modern life, and reducing our footprint is a major task that requires lots of ingenuity. Recycling high quality materials is an important part of conserving resources, but what can be done with organic waste like food scraps, soiled paper, and grass clippings?

Composting is the process of taking organic waste, or anything that rots, and giving it the ideal conditions to break down into a soil-like material that is beneficial for the environment. Composting can be done at home using compost bins, piles, or even worm farms inside your home. But it’s also done at a large scale at facilities like BarrTech just west of Spokane. Municipal organic waste services, such as the Clean Green bins in Spokane, are taken to these facilities to be composted in a process that is equal parts gross, groovy, and all-around fascinating.

And guess what’s new? City of Spokane will add one week of curbside yard and food waste green cart pick up in the winter months. The optional curbside yard and food waste collection service runs weekly from March through November and, starting next month, will include the first full weeks of January, February, and December in 2025.

Follow along as we learn more about composting both at home and at large in our latest episode of Let’s Explore Spokane!
