What’s cooking at the library? Just something we grew ourselves!
All summer long, visitors at Shadle Park Library have watched our Discovery Garden flourish with vibrant Asian tropical vegetables, thanks to the hard work of the Filipino American Association of the Inland Empire. Now, we’re inviting you to taste the fruits of our labor, literally!
Join us on Saturday, September 13th for A Wok on the Wild Side: Asian Vegetable Cook-A-Thon, a mouthwatering three-part cooking event in the Shadle Park Library Lobby that brings the garden to your plate.
Check out the schedule:
Kkeopjilkong Maneul Bokkeum (Korean Garlic Green Beans)
- 11:30am – 12:15pm
- We’re kicking things off with a simple and flavorful dish: stir-fried green beans with soy sauce and sesame oil. This recipe lets the natural sweetness of our homegrown string beans shine.
- Chef Antonio fell in love with Korean food thanks to his wife, and he’s sharing his passion in this quick and healthy demo. This is a perfect example of how just a few ingredients can make something unforgettable!
- 12:15pm – 1:00pm
- Next up is a Malaysian dish made with our beautiful garden eggplants! Pan-roasted and cooked with sweet onions, chili, and a tangy-sweet sauce, this dish will fill the library with irresistible aromas.
- Chef Alice Koh, owner of SeraiMas and a regularly featured chef at Feast World Kitchen, brings her rich experience to this flavorful dish. You can visit her shop at the Scale House Market too, if you want more of her amazing food!
Pinakbet (Filipino Mixed Vegetables with Chicken)
- 1:00pm – 1:45pm
- We’ll wrap things up with a Filipino favorite that brings all of our garden vegetables together in one savory, colorful dish! Bitter melon, Asian eggplant, string beans, squash, tomatoes, and tender chicken—all stir-fried with garlic, onion, and ginger.
- Presented by the Filipino American Association of the Inland Empire, this dish is a celebration of community, culture, and the rich variety of vegetables grown right here in our Discovery Garden.
Since this is a cook-a-thon, the start time for this program may vary slightly, it could begin a bit earlier or later depending on when the previous cooking session wraps up. To ensure you don’t miss the start, we recommend arriving a little before the scheduled time.
