There’s something timeless about putting pen to paper and no one knows it better than the Spokane Calligraphy Guild! This summer, discover the beauty, history, and artistry of handwritten letters through Calligraphy: The Art of Beautiful Lettering, a new exhibit at Central Library created in partnership with the Spokane Calligraphy Guild.
Now through August 30, the exhibit showcases contemporary works by Guild members alongside rare and historic examples from the library’s Inland Northwest Special Collection, highlighting the enduring art of beautiful lettering across generations.

Meet members of the Spokane Calligraphy Guild, learn about the tools and techniques of calligraphy, and discover how you can get started with this creative practice. Guild members will also be available to calligraph your name for free, answer questions, and share their passion for the art of lettering.
- Whimsical Hand Lettering: Saturday, July 25 at 10am, South Hill Library
Perfect for beginners, this fun and welcoming workshop will show you how to add personality and flourish to your everyday handwriting. Using pencils and pointed markers, you’ll explore creative lettering styles that are perfect for greeting cards, place cards, envelopes, journals, zines, and more. All supplies are provided, and no experience is necessary.
- Illuminations: The Art of Calligraphy, Highlights from the Exhibit and Special Collections: Thursday, August 20 @ 11am, Central Library
This Illuminations event features author and illustrator, Karyn Jeffrey, and her book, Life in Letters, as well as items from the library’s rare book collection. Get a close-up look at these items and hear from Karyn about the journey of making and lettering a handmade book. After the presentation, members of the Guild will be on hand to calligraph names and answer questions about the Guild and the exhibit.
